I'll be honest, it honestly feels more like the author realized that the pedophile was honestly the better option, got scared and quickly backpedelled. Up to the very last appearance, his Mother was awful and planning on using him to steal her money only to now behave like a good mother to him, and the pedo was smarter before, going through all that and leaving her after torture is extremely stupid and dangerous, there is nothing stopping her from telling the cops everything she did and about her relationship to her son, the threat doesn't work here. Author just got scared or the editorial came down on them.

Yeah the story at first felt more like an unhinged oneeshota taboo romance story about two couples, but then the author or the higher-ups changed their minds, so they hastily broke up one couple without any resolution and made our main Yandere completely jump the shark so you couldn't sympathize with her anymore.
All of this felt really abrupt and now we will completely change MCs apparently. A bit of a mess.

I know we liked to joke about how ironically the predator was treating Naoto better than his own mother but these last couple of chapters pretty much showed me that mother is actually better.

Despite being tortured by her she still wanted to tell the cops that it was her who had done it. Unfortunately, her trauma from the torture won can't blame her but it did show that she wasn't always like this.

Naoto is officially fucked. Literally a predators wet dream. Now no other adult is taking care of him besides her. She's won.

In these types of manga I usually have a hard time internalizing just how messed up these individuals are because how fucking hot they are(and they usually don't take it this far) but the torturing of the mother did for me. This chick is terrifying. My brain accepted the stalking, knocking out the teacher, hush money for the mother, drones that fucked that one kid's family garden, but this...was a too much man.

Seeing her finally acting like a good mother only for this to happen.

I know its very disturbing but yanderes do make us uncomfortable bro. We got too used to soft yanderes lately(they just pull a knife and smile and thats it), but this gives School Days kinda yandere vibes. I'd consider this girl a 'real' yandere ngl.

I still think that she's fucked not because of the whole organ removal and torture ordeal (your mileage may vary) but she WANTED Naoto's mom to still be a bad mother. She needed his mom to be terrible so he would keep running to her.

In other words, she didn't want to protect or own him at all or the like—she would even love for Naoto to continually be abused. As long as it ends with Naoto finding his comfort in her, needing her, and no real or serious harm came his way, it's a win.

She only drew the line on anything physical happening to Naoto beyond her control. Other than that, she needed Naoto to stay abused.

Like, damn. Finally. Now that's a yandere.

Nah i don't quite agree, only reason she would want to tell the cops is to get back at the yandere or get a dangerous creature locked up. Not so much care for her son, clearly seen by the fact before even the torture started she gave up her son. Has continued being abusive to him before that, and now seems to project her anger over what happened to her to her son.

There's not any world in which she's better to stick around than the yandere, except the one where the son finds out how twisted the yandere is.

However, reading some of the comments here, what is truly terrifying is how some people seem to overlook practically the entire narrative in favor of a biased interpretation. I mean, it is surprising to see that there are people who think Naoto’s mother is a good person or, even worse, that she was actually “trying to change.”

Naoto’s mother, this “good” woman whom so many people feel an enormous amount of pity for, was not only willing to rent/prostitute her own son in exchange for money. The next-door neighbor could have easily abused Naoto and, as long as she gave her enough money, his mother apparently would not have cared. In addition, she physically and verbally abused him. In reality, she did not care much about her son’s well-being either. It is not for nothing that Naoto went hungry and was abused by the fat teacher, whom the neighbor ultimately had to deal with herself. Naoto not only went hungry while living with his mother; she also did not seem to care whether her son was clean or even had clothes that were not torn. Naoto was not even properly fed or minimally cared for. Under any circumstances, this would have been enough for his mother to go to prison and for Naoto to be placed in some foster home.

Now, the mother’s change in behavior is not because she had some kind of divine revelation or because she genuinely wanted to become a better person. She simply felt happy because she now had money and, for that reason, she began treating Naoto better. Basically, he indirectly became the reason why she was receiving that money, even though Naoto himself was not even aware of it.

It seems that many people forget that, in Chapter 2, after insulting her own son, his mother tells him that it “makes her blood boil” to see him happy while she had had a bad day. That makes it quite clear that she did not feel genuine love for Naoto, nor was she concerned about his well-being. She was simply happy because, thanks to the circumstances surrounding him, she now had money and could benefit from it. That is why I consider saying that she was “trying to change” to be interpreting the story in a rather convenient way. His mother did nothing extraordinary and did not undergo any profound moral transformation; she simply began treating her son in a minimally decent way.

Although we didn't get to see the latter kill anyone, it's not going to surprise me if suddenly the author says she had already done so multiple times. I really do hope you wrote that tirade against Naoto's mom because you also realized this, and not merely because you prefer the groomer to the stereotypical abusive single parent. Is it humane to practically prostitute your own child? Is it humane when your child has a good day and you tell him you hate him for it? Is it humane to steal from your child and not feed them so you can have fun? Is it humane to make your child live in deplorable conditions including having to wear torn clothes and beg because, as a mother, you don’t care about your child in the slightest? Wow… What a concept of “humanity” you have.

The second point doesn’t count because it’s based on an assumption: “Yeah, we didn’t see her kill anyone, but… it could have happened watch out.” It adds nothing of value in any sense.

I wrote that critique of the mother precisely because many comments here seem to have undergone a collective lobotomy: they portrayed the mother as someone who “was trying to change” and Naruko as the absolute devil. Neither of them is good. That much is clear. But one is objectively worse than the other when it comes to Naoto’s well-being. Naruko, however twisted and evil her motivations may be, actively intervened to protect him. Without her… Let’s think about what would have become of Naoto’s life without Naruko’s intervention: (Naoto would have been abused by the pervert from the first chapter. There you go that’s the end of it.) Well, but let’s suppose that doesn’t matter. Obviously, Naoto would have continued to be harassed by the obese teacher who hated him. Well, let’s forget that, too. Let’s assume we eliminate all those external dangers. What would be left then? His mother’s daily mistreatment: neglect, and constant verbal, physical, and emotional abuse. Calling her “human” and Naruko a “monster,” as if there were a vast moral difference in favor of the former, is simply distorting what the manga showed chapter after chapter. Neither of them should be anywhere near Naoto. But to claim that the mother “is still very human” while downplaying years of abuse and dramatizing Naruko’s wickedness all while applauding Naoto’s mother for improving her treatment of him only when it suited her financially is neither serious nor sensible.
