Yeah, real couples give each other useful things. My dad got my mom a blender for her birthday once and its still in use to this day. More superficial gifts usually seem a bit awkward. Like, you get her a bracelet, what's she gonna do with that? Hang it on her wall beside all her Amane posters? (So sad that the manga's ruining the impression I got from the novel that her bedroom walls were covered in creepshots of Amane that she had to pack up whenever someone visited.)

Basically, he should have just done what any normal person would do and taken her asking for a whetstone as a sign she wanted to get married.
