Well, to play devil's advocate, if you're not aware of it, then how would you know that you're not aware of it? It's impossible to include the times when you aren't aware of doing something within your statistic of how often you do something, because the very fact of you "not being aware of it" removes it from your data. Someone could tell you of course, but... Would they? I imagine it'd be pretty rare.

So you'd basically just have to guess how often you'd notice, and most people tend to overestimate their mental faculties in these sorts of matters. We always think we're more capable than we are. That's why some people will read this series and think "if that were me, I'd totally realize that she was into me."

Part of what makes him a good person, and allowed Mahiru to settle so well, is that he's clearly making space for her to be herself and never assumes anything of her that would put her at a disadvantage; and if he assumed she was into him, but she wasn't (we know that is not the case but he does not) he could seriously harm her, even if not physically.
