It is pretty important in how it shows upfront what exactly Mahiru has to deal with in terms of guys confessing, and in the novel, this was also the very first time Amane "saved" Mahiru at school, and it shows his willingness to confront people (despite him usually avoiding that as much as possible) if doing so means keeping Mahiru safe. It's a very meaningful moment.
