The problem with characters like him, ie. low self-esteem pessimists, is that they can see the signs, but develop the "no way she likes someone like me" mantra and then proceed to self-hypnotize with it until someone takes thunder hammer and break their delusions.

THANK YOU. Amane is not dense, the poor bastard is on denial, he put himself so low that he can't believe that she actually feels that way for him.

And it hurts on a personal level. That, kind of, is a part of being a kid that age. Doubting yourself if you are trully worth some love.

depression is one helluva poison
but still, they were walking hand in hand there like it was the most common thing, and it wasn't like there wasn't a lot of people and she pretty much made a semi-confession there, like him getting knowing she accepts him for who he is, well, it's part to why he also has grow across the series.
