Man, sailing the seas in a ship without kill sounds rough as hell. Anybody who sailed in a sail yacht with centerboard/retractable or swing keel instead of full (stationary) kill - usually designed for milder waters like inland waters or sea shallows, allowing you to get directly to the beach once you pull it up and reduce boat's depth - and experienced how the it feels to handle it once you pull the keel/board up and suddenly the wind just blows you around, will understand immediately.
