@JaneJeon I think it is resigning to the circumstances, because our feelings of joy and happiness or sadness and misery are essentially the same, puppeteered by our brains to reinforce or get rid of a particular behaviour or habit we do. Being addicted to food is the most basic example. People with excessive eating habits may argue they choose it themselves, but why they choose it? Because their "puppeteer" brain makes it feel good to eat a lot. So that's resigning to circumstances too.

The true free will in any circumstances would be to analyse everything objectively, and not be tied down and influenced by they physiological "stick and carrot" responses of our bodies hardcoded into us by evolution.

I suppose better questions to ask are what is free will and do we even have it in the first place as a characteristic of human nature?
