That and how the rewind plot device kept undoing important character development, making me feel like I wasted my time getting invested in arcs.

Misery porn? Shall I ask, are you talking about the anime, manga or Light Novel?

The anime indeed has exaggerated and prolonged suffering (Also true for the new season). That’s why I believe it’s best to watch with some skepticism. However, the Light Novel is more balanced, and I highly recommend it. I haven't read the Manga.
