It really feels like this was axed at the most inopportune time. It seems pretty obvious that the MC was meant to end up with Akeno but the timing of the cancellation made that development feel too out of nowhere. I mean, half of the manga has been the arc where he makes up with Mio. Transitioning from that right into a finale and bam, MC and Akeno get together, would have been way too awkward. I can understand the intent behind the hidden identity of who he ended up with as a "damned if you, damned if you don't" but I still find it frustrating.
At least how I can see this being wrapped up better is if he really did end up with Mio. To make the finale into conclusion less awkward is by actually having Mio involved with the finale. As a user previously stated, just finishing off her character with a failed bj is insane. She's a friend of Akeno too so she would be very concerned too, maybe throwing in some actual character moments between the her and MC that would make me think that relationship has enough to last at least one more year.
In the end, I can't blame the author to much for how sloppy this is since they obviously had plans to take this story somewhere but didn't get the chance, even though I can see how the ending could polished more.

The trip was the beginning of the end. Randomly masturbating in front of a distant relative, who is willing to be intimate with you for no reason, showed the author was losing where to go next.

It's always so funny to me when a story is just a bunch of "concepts" tied together, where there's clearly no proper way of development.....and still manages to have an ending that's even more disjointed

My god, not only there was a barrage of new and returning characters, the main "girlfriend" just disappears and the ending is purposely left ambiguous because MC did not have chemistry with any of the two.

I think this is one of those cases where I would've preferred if it was just axed midway with no ending. What a waste of time.

Damn axe-kun strikes again! Although most of you say it was a bad ending, i think it was decent. Most mangas wish this kind of ending compared to what they get most of the time. Yes, it could have more development but it tied most of the nodes. Also saying her mom is like that only cuz shes squizo (mental illness) was such a laugh. Also who's Mio? the not-black haried one? BITCH I HOPE SO. Im neither glad or mad MC ended up keeping his gf and not going for Akane (black haired one? why do they only speak in last names? 😭). Also justice for the girl in the shed (the painter) she needs some dick too!

We literally don't know who he ended up with. There wouldn't be a reason for the shadow if the author planned on revealing their identity.

That said though, thematically Mio (the blonde) just doesn't make much sense. She was barely present in the last couple chapters and the issue with her not really exciting MC still isn't fully gone, while Akeno got heavy focus in the end and has always had an easier time understanding how MC ticks.

As others have mentioned, I think the author made this non-committal ending because the manga got axed and he couldn't flesh out an Akeno ending the way he would have wanted to, but also didn't want to go for Mio when she was just clearly not a good fit for MC, so we got this half-assed shit.
