So what are those things strapped to her suppose to be? First thought is AED pads, which can't do any harm through clothes. I'm pretty sure explosives don't get packed in thin sheets, except maybe thermite?

For two japanese people they sure come across almost every action/mystery trope there is on the daily. What is next? Bank robbery while they are in the bank?
That's pretty normal, there's no bigger corpse magnet than a detective manga protagonist.

Yeah, anyone working criminal cases, whether it be policemen, judges or prosecutors are expected to be at risk of retaliation. Though they usually have an inkling whom it is that threatens them, since these kinds of things happen with organised crime more often than not.

One thing I really dislike about Japanese apartment is how the room front door is visible from outside the building. No idea why they design it that way

Those are cheap (if any real estate can be called that these days) apartments that are usually also very small. Building this way saves materials and labour, since otherwise you'd need to construct inner corridors just to link these sets of rooms. That would make the whole construction heavier, so even more materials would be needed to make it stable. Do keep in mind that Japanese buildings must meet earthquake standards pretty much unseen elsewhere in the world.
