Don’t call him straight if you know that.

This isn’t the only time this author has pulled “straight, but”, which is one of the most annoying BL tropes

A punk he may be by a smooth one for sure.

On a serious note, I do feel bad that he's so used to being the afterthought O not given any importance in the home that's he's used to that sort of treatment...

@Thrembs somebody can be straight but have exceptions in who they love. Sexual desire and love aren't the same for some people, or there are simply those with exceptions to their sexuality. Sure, it's overused in BL but I still wouldn't label him gay or bisexual right away either.

It really is as simple as “person falls in love with someone of same gender == person is not straight”.
“I’m straight, I’m just a man in love with my husband. No homo”.
I’m not trying to apply some orientation to these characters, but rather point out that this author is once again reinforcing the idea that if someone finds the opposite sex attractive that means they are straight.

Bisexual (etc) erasure is a huge problem, especially in heteronormative societies.

When fiction reinforces that, it bothers me

@Thrembs I can kinda get where you're coming from as being bisexual myself, but if we are to break this down, he probably is still "straight". He has liked only women his whole life probably till this point, or at least only saw them as a means of attraction. Then comes this guy, something that challenges it because well, he is outside of his norm. In my honest opinion, I will consider him straight, just somebody that found one person attractive despite being outside of his possible candidates. This is because we don't have enough, nor does he have enough information, to appropriately decide whether this is just a fluke or he actually can consider men a consistent possibility. So no... I don't think it's that simple as "man falls in love with same gender one time = not straight." In actuality, I find BL stories that turn straight men "gay" just with one encounter more infuriating than trying to preserve a straight identity. Like... weren't you enjoying women a bit ago?

I was debating whether to reply or not because well, stories like these you just have to turn off your brain... I doubt the mangaka thought much about their sexuality as we are since as you noted, this is fiction, which is also meant to appeal primarily to women in Japan. But I thought maybe I should expand more on my point of view as did you. Of course, we are both entitled to our own look on this and thank you for sharing yours!

Once is enough.
One can then wave a flag.
UNLESS it turns out it wasn’t love. See below.*

I’m not talking about this comic’s story so much as the writing and release in the context of an actual view which can exclude bisexual people from relationships with people of the same gender.

While I’m a lesbian there was a time I thought I was pan.
I was dismissed and treated with disgust in Japan. I asked a friend (bi) what was going on and yup. They thought “oh. Another straight. We know you’ll always leave”.
She always had to pretend to be straight or gay.

*I tried dating a guy and found out I’d just been appreciating them in the abstract. “That guy is hot stuff. Not for me”
It’s like hearing music I can tell is good, but I don’t want to listen to. Lady gaga is super talented and I never want to hear her again.
