I think they'll explain it away as 'it has to be potion or at least potion adjacent'.

Think of it like he has potion mastery at a game breaking level. Any item with a 'potion' class got mad buff so they did what they did, but 'throwing weapon' which is not potion will probably act as a normal weapon in his hand.
