The concept of strange spirits existing that can only harm people who can see them is also a thing in Japanese lore. Culture? Whatever.
Anyway, at least in the Japanese version, many of the spirits are entities that used to be simple ghosts but have become degraded and twisted. Resulting in the kind of things we see here.
