Coming back to this chapter after catching up, I really like the way they demonstrate some of the mechanics of the creatures here, she may not have made eye contact but she was afraid enough for it to interact with her until she saw her auntie.
If you look closely though, as its hand was coming out the other side of her head it cut through a few hairs, meaning she must have realized what was happening and focused on it too much again, which allowed it to interact with her again before fully passing clear of her hair, but then she let herself get distracted by the conversation and stopped thinking about it.
Thankfully she didn’t notice it too much while the fingers were in the middle of her head, all in all a cool detail.
