So on one hand, a super practical invention that could greatly improve the lives of a large swath of the populace...but on the other, a kaboom.

I kinda feel like the author just felt like doing something more whimsical and came up with an excuse for it. And I mean...they suggest it's safer, but it still explodes with a boom, meaning there's still a big pressure wave, meaning it's still plenty deadly. For something used in such limited circumstances, it doesn't feel like this is a revolutionary invention at all compared to the stove.

In regard to the first point, they said the rich and powerful don't care about stuff that will improve the lives of common citizens as much as they care about flashy stuff that will entertain them. Is that really so surprising to hear?
Ir regard to our second argument, it's apparently just light and sound with no actual explosion.

And if a decently smart person gets their hands on it, increases the output further and compresses the blast into 1 direction you basically have a magitech firearm a "peasant" can use, which could lead to some let's call it political instability.
