The score is a bit high tbh. You're just used to dealing with bloated ratings from people who shouldn't be rating stuff. People who rate Isekais and modern anime with 7+. That's why I stopped using MAL and use AniDB now. That said, AniDB is also getting pretty bad lately. Wish there was a manga counterpart for AniDB. MangaUpdates weighing system and layout is pretty bad for finding good stuff.

If rating a manga came with adding a reason why it was rated that way, I think many of the joke raters would shy away

Ah yes, when 1999 was the far off future.

@ganggangnigga the score is low because 2-3 people didn't like that it was made 38 years ago, and so rated it low. The same reason people rate stories with rape a 1. Or a vegan rating a BBQ restaurant a 1. "This thing doesn't match my tastes so it's trash".
