Do you like/hate Yuri as a genre? Why?

i don't necessarily mind the Girls' Love 'soft' yuri stories, and even think that some of them are kind of cute (looking at you 2hu doujins). but the 'real' yuri genre, which (obviously) focus mainly on life/relationship drama between two romantically involved girls, is rife with issues.

to paraphrase the late @Halo, yuri is by far the most braindead genre. you'll see the most nothing stories with 9+ ratings just because they depict some flowery yuri relationship that makes the readers swoon whenever the art/dialogue pulls on their heartstrings. there are many straight romance series that do this same thing (example), but i've never seen any that are so barren of plot or character writing as what i see in yuri series. oftentimes the artwork and paneling are painfully standard, yet they're endlessly praised as if Da Vinci himself rose from the dead to finely craft them.

i think the yuri genre as a whole represents a sort of far end of a spectrum of the 'reader delusion' that manga can reinforce. actually, just imagine a graph where the X-axis is Realism (left-most is isekai, right-most is modern Japan or so) and the Y-axis is reader self-awareness (highest is Rent-A-Girlfriend readers, lowest is yuri). it would look like so:

pretty much every yuri series would go where that dot is on the graph. the audience is placated by anything and everything as long as they get to see a couple of cute girls smiling at each other— and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Not sure how it is for shojo manga, but yaoi has so far not been invasive in my areas, so I maintain a respectful distance.

Just an old habit from when I used to read on manga sites that had limited choices before MangaDex became a thing. I have tried the other types but they don't really work for me, especially double page (ew).

Action shounen manga usually have big fujoshi fandoms.
Out of the 80 Jujutsu Kaisen doujinshi on MD, only 10 of them aren't yaoi. lmao

Isn't Otherside picnic still primarily a Urban Horror series? Yeah, the main characters absolutely are a yuri couple, but I think the draw there is different

Executioner and her way of life was also pretty mid from what I could remember, strong start, but it quickly fizzled out.

Gushing of Magical Girls also has the BDSM-Ecchi Comedy as it's main pull.

2/3 are manga's I would rate highly
