Author really building up to the big battle once again! Part of what has made the fights work so well in this series has been how the various participants really get shown in a multifaceted way, and even the evil side is still pretty cool and have their own motivations. Now we get to see the full Sun Cult in serious action again, but setup in its own sort of isolated bubble since apparently the nature of the world magic "story" means all the bloodlines can't just go all out at the same time. Yet more pieces of world building, but we can't see the full puzzle yet even though clearly lots of the characters know it.
It almost makes you forget these are supposed to be the enemies of our main characters.
Sooo again, what side are the baddies ?
Part of the real angst here is that it's not merely about the present but the future. We've had a lot of pointers at this point that the dragon transformation ultimately affects everyone, messing with their thinking and emotional responses. Depending on their original personalities and resulting powers the Kings might hold onto more or less of themselves for more or less time, but they all seem to eventually become monsters. Roars is really young, and may well be pretty decent, but if ultimately the king (and in turn all kin) will still become bad then humanity trying to eradicate them would still be completely reasonable. The Dragon side have done a lot of horrible things, and whether Roars chooses to go along with that or just can't refuse doesn't change that it's still on the side of the dragons.
But for the time being we readers remain in the dark on both the past and full present of what's going on.
