Bro can she just catch some fucking break already?!
Though I'm really glad Hazuki is ready to do anything to help her. Also tsundere monster is a tsundere.
Thanks for the chapter!

Things are taking a very interesting turn. Gotta say I believe in some of the theories crafted in the posts above, specially the younger brother one, considering Duskin's flashback we get of Sumire on Duskin has a low angle PoV (that can be just a stylistic choice though).

Maybe Sumire doesn't transform to protect herself in this case because she has a low value of herself instilled due to the mistreaments she had by her parents in the past? That have just been reinforced over and over as she grew up.

Also, it's never been explicitly stated that she has only 1 brother too, right?

Thank you very much for the scanlation. I can't wait for the next chapter.

  • Sumire: when her mother strangles her (did we know about that?), you see a child in a striped T-shirt point at Sumire. Firstly, is this child supposed to be Sumire's younger brother? According to c1p53, the brother is way younger than Sumire, so maybe not? And secondly, is this child commanding Sumire's mother to kill her? If so, why?

I don't think the child is commanding Sumire's mother, just in shock and reaching his hand out to them (nice catch too, reading in a hurry I let this one go past me), I also think this may be the same as Duskin's flashback PoV. I could be wrong though.

On rereading, I expect Sumire's transformation condition is going to be (as per c2p~49) that she can only transform to "protect the things that matter" to her, like when her little brother or Hazuki were in danger.
Yeah that makes sense, next chapter she will transform to protect duskin.

Read ahead or not...
She will appear at the end of this arc, certainly the dude from the Audit department looks like the main opponent of this arc, but he is not, and currently she has been alluded in a previous chapter as a weapon

I understand that he wanted to be thorough but I think the Heat Ray should go first. Dude set our FMC up for failure by starting with the conditions that were least conducive to transformation. If it were me, I would try to 100% recreate the conditions that cause transformation, then slowly deviate from those conditions until FMC can transform anywhere, anytime.

This one takes cues from Chansaw Man, the setup and some characters are relatively similar. The thing is Chainsaw Man is utterly deranged in some aspects, it might be a hard pill to swallow sometimes. This one is a mellower read and more shonen-esque, at least for now. Another with a similar setup but I still have to read is Kaiju n8, I read a spin off wich is just slice of life, so it looks like it's even tamer, I don't really know.

i wouldnt say this takes "cues" from chainsaw man so much as this and chainsaw man are a part of a slew of manga that embody a sort of "inner demon" concept or have a protag who somehow is imbued with the evil they're trying to defeat in a way or other how gets op powers that let them transform --ie naruto, bleach, blue exorcist, attack on titan, etc

however these (this and chainsaw man) r both a new gen deviation of that trope I would say where its far more grotesque in a sense? i havent summed it up the best but i think that there is a much greater genre within shonen and manga as a whole

The base premise is very similar, even Sumire is a carbon copy of Kobeni in design and character. It's just it probably wont go the same places Chansaw Man goes, doesn't seem there is any sort of resemblance of the sheer insanity Fujimoto's works have, hence the "cues" and not "copy". And a version of Chainsaw Man painting by the usual gritty shonen numbers could be entertaining in its own right.
