Dude after chapter 31 this manga has been nonstop scary as all fuck

That means this is both Ito's most scary manga, and probably Nagasaki's most politically impactful, before these last 3 chapters i was indeed wondering why he went with Ito instead of Urasawa for this one, but i am getting it now

Nagasaki has covered war crimes before, plenty of times with Urasawa and other authors, so it is a common theme of his, but having Ito doing the illustrations makes it hit different

Because when you consume horror media, you are not really thinking about the horrors of reality, the safety pin that makes you go "thank goodness it is just manga, and neoliberalism, war, extremist, and political corruption aint real" just leaves, and gets supplanted with "well... at least it wasn't a liveleek video"

And you know it can get even scarier, because in a way shit is even crazier now that the alt right is gaining force worldwide, so strangely enough, the safety pin of fictional horror, is now the safety pin of "well at least all this is back in the 2000s", but we are running out of safety pins at this rate with reality outdoing fiction

This is even not the worst that happened. The Soviet army was a walking war crime machine, according to almost every source you can find (it was standard practice to kill everyone in villages). In the histories, most authors just don't bother passing judgement, it's that horrifying.

This is pretty much expected when you get on one side totalitarian ideology and on the other side people with customs that make the Taliban seem meek and normal. One of the large reasons they were able to get so much ground in Afghanistan and the borders around Pakistan was that they were better than the local warlords and their customs and laws...
