Might be both tbh, he’s likable since he’s someone that goes against the grain of the usual protagonist and the more we see his story the more we relate to him

I love Kenshin's character so much. He's not a bad guy, but he clearly has an ego on him and desperately doesn't want Aoba to be better than him because of his superiority complex. He feels threatened by Aoba, something Kenshin's never felt before, and he's scared of Aoba beating him because he never wanted someone as weak as Aoba once was to surpass him, the main character of his own story

Aoba will be furious when he learns his love interest has a potential girlfriend.

Also, what a wasted opportunity to finally make Kenshin vs. Hachiya happen; the author just loves sidelining cool secondary characters.

So the author waited 211 chapters to reveal that Kenshin had a love interest? I'm not even impressed or confused about the new adversary, 'happens all the time. If I was Aoba, though, I would think my opp having a love interest only means he's not as committed - taking it seriously - as me to even think about romance.
