Wouldn't the bike be inconvenient in this situation? This town was a backwater so I can't imagine the road infrastructure to be in good condition and a typical bike requires a smooth surface to have your rear end not look like somebody's after kinky sm play. Also, the rubber is kinda expensive so I don't see this strategy as viable one.

Also giving only 50 houses when so much will be left without them is an easy recipe for a revolution.

@AngryFerret its 150 houses.

Well, he is trying to develop the land towards the castle so it would be logical to also improve the road infrastructure. Riding a bike on shitty paving blocks is enough to ruin my butt, hours on dirt road would destroyed it lol

@AngryFerret

The roads is actually pretty well made and riding a bike should not be a problem on cobblestone unless its poorly done or it have gotten uneven from frost.
That is ofc assuming there is dampeners on the thing, if not then yeah it might be a problem.

But.....
This is indeed one of the few plans /schemes that actually fails, not because of the roads and whatnot.
But because there is not enough people skilled enough to make them and its a lower priority once the war starts so the human resources have to be diverted away from the "bike factory" for the war efforts.

Thanks for the info! Still trust me I rode my bike on a cobblestone road for almost two years to get to my uni, it wasn't the nicest thing if you have a simple city bike.

@Dezaki
Ugh sorry, misremember the amount. Well, still a lot of angry homeless people.

How is he going to make the ball bearings for the hubs and the bottom bracket, and all identically sized to the 0.01mm? What about the rubber trees? And the spokes and threaded nipples that attach them to the rims? And the precisely machined chainrings and cogs? And all the identically sized pins, plates, and rollers for the chain? And why does it have a rear reflector when there are no other vehicles on the road that project light?

I doubt they'd be that angry. After all, before he took them in they were just going to fucking die, lol. Now they're being taken care of, and even if they set up a tent town for a couple months, they also have walls to evacuate into if threatened, and an armed force to protect them, and they're waiting to have jobs made for them so they can be full citizens.

Also, again, walls and armed forces and witches. I highly, HIGHLY doubt they'll be upset enough to revolt.

@Nk9bjP4A: Have you forgotten that they have a witch who can shape metal/materials into precise shapes? Could have them make molds to aid mass production.

@StrangeStripes bearings aren't made in molds. Hubs are CNC'd, after casting because you need a precisely circular races with very minimal deviations to get the balls to run smoothly. There's also the cones and nuts. I wouldn't think they've created a DIN standard for screws and nuts. Let alone thread standards. Each hub has 18 balls. Bottom brackets may have more. Headsets also have bearings. The freehub also has bearings unless it's a fixed gear. Let's say in total 100 balls per bicycle. There are so many various components in a bicycle that needs different technologies. For example the cables and housings.
I don't think they can make rubber out of any material. They'd need to raise rubber trees to collect the sap.

One more thing that the bike plan fails is there is not enough rubber. Roland still need Soraya to make the coating, or in this thing is wheel.

Instead of a modern bicycle he could have introduced one of its predecessors, like this. Seems a lot easier to produce.

Just coming back to the bike issue, as everybody here says it is just inefficient, the better idea would be to just introduce a horsecart or something similar. Public transport FTW :p

@Kayriel
Well in this story I highly doubt that they will have dissent but in reality, just imagine that your previous neighbor that doesn't have a family is given a house and you with multiple children need to be happy with a tent. For some time yes you will be grateful but after a while, you will just be mad.
