?? Why would your friends act differently if you were in a tough spot? If it's awkward, then they aren't very good friends, are they?
It's only awkward because people don't usually talk about their problems, so others don't know how to react because lack of practice.
If everyone approached their friendships with the intention of slowly deepening trust and being increasingly open, there wouldn't be this wierd pride culture in the first place.
