@boldmonkey I'm pretty sure that casting defensive spells early way before the fight, and indirect attacks(which pretty much invalidades cover) are pretty much a staple of any good sorcerer or mage. No seriously, anyone who knows classic fantasy tropes knows that magic is something very op in how it's used. We have omnidirectional barriers which cannot be harmed by physical damage, attack spells that can be created in the area you're targetting as opposed to having to aim to cast. Or even summoned meteors that can bombard the battlefield from above much like carpet bombing an area. But with catastrophic results depending on the size of the meteor. Time stopping is also a thing, pretty much a stapple of any mage that has reach the highest levels of offensive or defensive magic.

Taking the D&D model into account, a mage could simply wake up and cast an extended defensive spell that can last almost an entire day, and only people using magical gear could ever think on harming him. Mages also cast sensorial spells that automatically detects whoever enters the area. SO no amount of preparation or machinery will allow you to evade that kind of security.
There's a reason why mages are constantly nerfed in most stories(either by inventing bullshit reaons to prevent them from learning how to protect themselves without magic, like using armor or knowing martial art of any kind, or forcing them to carry only saves or wands, or by dumbing down mages to prevent them from using their spells in the most effective way, or a combination of both)

Haven't you wondered why in a world where we have dragon knights and all kinds of warriors, we don't have a single proper mage in Gate? It's easy, Mages would be hard to deal with, the military wouldn't be able to curbstomp the medieval army on the other side of the gate, if they had a mage to provide their knights and infantary with barriers or defensive spells to enhance their abilities beyond humans levels. Even the mages we do have there are so weak compared to a basic D&D mage that their spells are usually outperfromed by heavy weaponry such as machine guns, RPG launchers, missiles and so on.

@TrueGoddessReincarnation Really? That's what you're going to nitpick on? The act of casting spells beforehand is actually much more realistic than having an army protect mages so they cast embarrasingly long spells in real time.
If this is not what you mean, then what are you talking about? Cause we were talking about Guns vs Medieval Fantasy. And among all fantasy D&D is the one who actually comes close to how magic would work for real if it existed.

@boldmonkey No shit, really?

*facepalm* My comment was a direct answer to someone talking about Guns vs fantasy. It doesn't matter if the manga is fantasy or not
