Why couldn't he just always have eyes? I simply don't get it when they do that. It should be one or the other, otherwise it's just jarring.

I had those same thoughts, I don't get why the artist didn’t keep drawing them after they were first shown. If it's some sorta artistic trick, I'm not following.

It's not really a trick, it's obviously to save time and let people self-insert. But now half of those reasons are out since the character is developping.

This is just my own speculations, but it has something to do with him being a blank-slate character used as reader's point of view. He doesn't need to show emotions that necessitates drawing the eyes a lot of the time, thus the no-eye. But the rule can be broken when necessary (like this page for example).

I think as an artistic choice, showing the eyes more often is just fine, and I think it made this even more effective.

it's just easier to not draw them, and it's also to keep our focus more on the Ri-chan. also adds dramatic effect when they use them for things like this
