@Elbow You're right, [SOCIETY] is the real boogieman. My life would be totally great if it just weren't for [AMBIGUOUS SOCIETY] ruining it.

I've seen some concerns over melting temperatures of glass. While most are in the range of 1700 C, a hydrogen/oxygen torch can be reach 2000 C, and as he brought over a generator, it should be possible to electrolyze water for the oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen can be burned in air for a similarly high temperature.

There are several types of glass. Borosilicate is a mixture of silica and boron (B2O3) which had good thermal properties and is easier to make clear, though needs higher temperatures. There's also Soda Lime glass (mix of Na2CO3, CaO, sometimes magnesia, and alumina). How To Make Everything has a whole series of videos on his quest for clear glass)

One thing to keep in mind is that glass cools unevenly, so you have to anneal the glass at about 580 C to reduce stress in the final product.

If the MC is Roland (from RTW) who has the scientific background maybe their kingdom can researching some modern technology 😅
But Zenjirou is just a salaryman (I think) with accounting background.

@00nowhereman I do wonder if they only gave half truths. Clarity is probably extremely important, but perhaps magical tools needn't be spherical, but spheres are just easier to imbue mana into.

@Kanol

ah right, thanks for the chapter number.
yeah the reason you need firebricks is because without it you don't get the forge hot enough.
Firebricks does this by being a very good insulator and dont transfer heat to the outside as fast.
The reason putting your hand on a cold metal bar feels much colder then wood even if both have been in the same temperature outside Is becouse it "steals" the heat from your hand much faster then the wood.
This is why it was hard to get really high temperatures in old time furnaces as the heat was transporter away even if it was a encloses space, even less so if you have a open air furnaces like a glassblower furnaces.

To all the people who think they can just melt the bottle and make marbles: Glass manufacturing doesn't work that way. You can't just melt it and form it back into another shape. If you want to recycle it you need more primary resources (quartz sand, chalk, soda) to keep the quality up. Just melting it will deteriorate the quality.

@Goldenzeal There's always asbestos insulation if you're extremely careful and/or aren't too concerned about dying horribly. There's probably better solutions, but I'll admit my knowledge here is topical.

@ Ruhrpottpatriot Interesting. Deteriorate how? I've seen people remelt glass and fixed some cracked glass with a torch before and didn't notice a marked drop in quality. I know you need a seed crystal if you're making a monocrystal silicon boule.

A perfect glass bottle itself probably works very well for creating a magic tool as she didn't disclose what shapes can be used.
They really have been had.

Is anyone else not surprised that it was a ploy to get the jewels? It was obvious from the start for me. You don't send someone with loose lips to a diplomatic meeting with other royals. Personally, I thought both the prince and princess were ploys. But it seems the prince was a bit smarter for knowing how foolish he is, and using that to his advantage. He totally turned the saying "better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt" on it's head.

@FirenzeClipper He did, but he switched worlds on the basis of "I'm basically going to be a stud horse.", so it's not like he's laden with technical explanations of how to start a homegrown glass industry from scratch, unlike various other isekai protagonists.

In the *N, they explain that
in his random DVDs, he has one that's about glassmaking, but it was ultimately useless since it basically said "To make a glass kiln that can survive the temperatures required, use firebricks(?). You can make firebricks by taking shattered firebricks and mixing them with mortar."
