the commercial series was made AFTER the success of the doujinshis and sara's great reception (i think the author was approached by an editor or something).

aside from kou none of them appeared in the doujinshis. they're all original characters for the commercial adaptation. luckily the mother appeared in one or two of the short extras on fanbox tho, meaning she (and hopefully the rest of the characters) will get a proper introduction in the doujinshi series as well.
