The dropoff in quality plus sudden death smells like a cancellation
People say stuff like this all the time, at the drop of a hat. Meanwhile, I say this isn't even good enough to get cancelled in Japan. Have you seen the things they usually axe over there? Everyday is opposite day or something for the publishers. As for the "death," I'll believe it when I see a funeral. Maybe. Do you know, I was skeptical of Maes Hughes for a good while continuing with the rest of the series afterwards? Fake death, deep cover, keep the family safe while he does his thing. Just suddenly meeting up with Roy and getting decked for making him and everybody else cry. That seems like some shit an author might pull. Never trust an apparent death completely.
