We can all see how this is gonna go. The opposing kingdom is stupid and desperate. They decided to kill all rebelling farmers to set an example. The farmers are pass the point of no return, they will try to cross the border regardless of how many die. The Treia army will have no choice but to cross the border to attack the farmers. It's there that Aegir will get the excuse he needs to kill the invading army, and "save" the farmers while at it.

Happens all the time with people in charge of things they didnt build themselves.

Company A makes great products and builds up customer trust and is massively successful. Corporation X buys out Company A and maximizes profits, destroy customer trust, and fires oldest and experienced employees to save costs.

Company A gets liquidated and corporation X sees Company B is a massive success...

So one of the villagers purposely tries to get close to the MC and the retarded soldiers continue firing arrows. And one is about to hit the MC, so he catches it and orders his troops to attack the opposing Lord's because they technically tried to kill him.

It's not always is just that. Moreover it actually happen quite often in the history and reason why poaching villagers from other nobles territories was a serious crime.

And about the reasons sometimes you can't think in a long-term perspective. After war debts, increased amount citizens in cities and towns resulting in hunger, lack of information about the peasant situation or even a hostile act of other nobles could make you have high taxes that you just couldn't lower if you want to survive.

People are stupid but usually not that stupid to be stupid just for the stupidity sake.
