He confiscated her umeboshi . . . which is just food . . . during lunch. WTF man, do you think your job is just to fuck with people? What a worthless dork. I don't care if you have granny issues, don't take them out on the kids you are responsible for. Not just a creep, but ungrateful on top of it--she'd just made lunchtime waaay less stressful for him than he'd been expecting, and in return he gratuitously punishes her.

@nyanpass I don't think everyone does that at least once, no.

That said, I'll withhold judgement on whether he's a thief til he leaves the building with it or not.
Being a thief for food (necessities) isn't the worst thing in the world. Though, thieving from a bakery is kinda a lower blow than thieving from some big chain...

Either way, even kinda justified thieving is thieving. But yeah, it hasn't necessarily been stolen yet.

@Ayumeya So what? If someone offers me a food I dislike, I say "No, thanks". I don't steal it from them. Oh sorry, "confiscate". Heh, everyone's up in arms about the kid stealing the bun (and rightly so), but the teacher stole a whole box of food from her under cover of authority, and not even because he wanted it, but just to be a prick. That seems the bigger crime to me.
And just what category of food you or he deems it to be strikes me as irrelevant. Sure, if all she was eating was a bag of marshmallows he might want to get her to eat something healthy--but she'd already eaten a balanced lunch, and indeed made sure the other kids did. If there's some rule against a snack of any sort with lunch, that would be a stupid rule--but he cited no such rule, he just arbitrarily took her stuff. As far as can be told from the manga, he just took it because the stuff makes him antsy because of memories of his grandmother being a bitch while she fed it to him. But he's an adult with responsibilities; pulling arbitrary bullshit to make his students feel bad because he has issues is failing those responsibilities.

It's allowed in my school to bring and consume homemade food and beverages as long as they are not consumed during classes/lessons, it's just so dumbfounding to me that the teacher would confiscate the tea and umeboshi from Hinata, like what's the point? They are not even harmful/illegal substances also not disrupting the classes or being a bad influence or anything. It's probably just some sort of Japanese culture/ideology, but I honestly don't get those pointless rules that are set just to "hammer down the nails that stick up".
Anyway, thanks for the additional page at the end that provide the references/glossary with pictures~ That's some passionate dedication I appreciate! Those are some really good looking well-balanced diet, looking back at my primary school lunch diet the menu was pretty plain and not nutritious at all compared to that, though it was a different time in a different country so it can't be helped...

seems people think japan is some kind of utopia then shocked to face reality.

student can't bring anything that consider unnecessary for learning (especially for elementary student, since food is provided by school).
sound dumb, but that's how they teach discipline in there.

school is place where they enforce a communal and unity sense. bringing food might show different in social class, which is against egalitarian sense school try to made (same with strict uniform dress). it's remnant of their semi military school system.

it might be only food, but still not unnecessary for learning regardless. and you hate a person just because he doing the job? he didn't even take them for his personal use you know. it's back to her in the end.

does this a good system? personal opinion, it isn't. but that's just how Japanese is.

I think it's safe to assume that he is her grandson. Is he shoplifting though? If he is then this manga is taking a pretty odd turn.

She never thinks of her kid(s), just the grandkid. Was she his guardian?

@Kaarme I certainly had no respect for authority since very young. They mostly didn't hassle me 'cause I got good grades, but when they did I didn't react that well. But frankly I think to this day that respect for authority is a stupid idea. People in authority are no better than anyone else; the only possible excuse for authority existing is if it's somehow useful to the people under it, and one of the primary requirements for a person in authority not to be actively despised is, not abusing that authority to make people's lives worse.

@ShadowWolfXIII . . . Looking at it again, I guess he did. When I first read through, because it was the frame immediately after he said "I'm confiscating this!" I took it as the frame actually showing him taking the stuff away. I'm still nearly as pissed off though. "Be sure not to bring weird things to school"--what the fuck is that?! If there's one thing I hate it's authorities who think their job is to enforce conformity. And no, I don't care that many Japanese think that's an actual value. They are mistaken, it's vile.
