To me it is apparent that Sakuya was a cat. What @Yunefia summed up proves this enough I believe. Besides this is not kind of gloomy manga where real children (with hair longer than themselves) appear lying on the bare ground under the house naked.

Sakuya's death could've been accidental. Since, if her "murderer" was really Sadao, then Sakuya would then be connected with Hinata's old home and her hatred of cats (specifically pissing in the garden). Hence, Sakuya's death being after when Hinata (old) dies and the later generations move on and abandon the old house. Maybe Sadao took care of Sakuya (cat) when he was young, and when the house was abandoned, he told the white lie that he would be back or something, which eventually formed into resentment. The fear of water could be both a play on cats disliking swimming, since it makes their fur wet & w/e, and rain seeping into the remains of the floor of the old house.

@CureCustard there's only a handful of intentional death situations where mud is gonna fill your ears. One is sinking to the bottom of a waterway or swamp, the other is a live burial of some kind in boggy ground. However, you're right about it looking like the bottom of a temple. It reminded me of the scene under the house from Kenshin when that one kid meets the burned guy while hiding under the house.

@Speedphoenix big, open, and very sensitive, cat ears are. So it feels right.
