It has been known for a long time that lots of cosmic dust falls down on Earth, but most saw it as impossible to find it among all the earthly dust. The one who worked out how to do it was amateur astronomer Jon Larsen. He wrote a book called "On the Trail of Stardust" about how to do it. His reward was having an asteroid named after himself, not too bad.
