I know that "chinese" consists of hundreds of mutually unintelligible languages, and even within same language the accent and dialect can vary drastically from town to town.

I presume Long's troubles with not having a clear dialect would have been even more pronounced in his era than today, but I'm not educated enough on the topic to say for sure.
