I get the feeling that what Hyce has is a form of "Spirit Summoning", that is, he summons weapon spirits.
In Japanese mythology and folklore, objects that have existed for a long time or gathered up a lot of spiritual energy (Positive, negative or both), can gain a life of their own.
This is why Japan has a "Toy festival" that involve the ceremonial burning of old toys and items, most of them having reached nearly a hundred years of age. This is to release the Spirits and prevent them from becoming resentful at humanity.
The other form of Inspiritment of objects, is when they are involved in great tragedies and suffering... Such as being involved in murder, horrid accidents, or war. The suffering and grief that occurs can result in a confused and resentful inspirited object or weapon that lashes out at the world around them. (This is why if you see a sword sticking out of a battlefield, DON'T pick it up without a blessing or a priest. That shit's cursed with malice and sorrow.)
The opposite is also true, though: When an Object or item is treated or crafted with great love and care, it can become a Blessed object. This can result in the object becoming something of a guardian to whoever owns and cares for it.
This can mean Hyce's weapons are Blessed weapons, weapons treated with great love and care by the previous user, and have been passed down to Hyce, where they protect him however they can.
