From an investment standpoint I get it. He helped her grow her board in a particular way that saved her friend's life. Now there is a mystery around it that another reincarnated noticed so the "safest " place to be is at Hikaru's side but it does feel a bit contrived as wellThis feels like harem for the sake of increasing sales to the people who love harem stories. The story itself hadn't developed toward a direction where needing to add another member would be necessary. Especially not like this. It would me more acceptable if there was a new arc where a new member, initially temporary, would be a core part of the plot. Which is exacly how Lavia become a partner for the MC. This Paula, however, doesn't add any purpose anymore. Her arc is already over. She just fell for the MC, so she wants to be with him, even though Hikaru already has a girlfriend.
The story would feel shallow and inconsequential without that. I prefer setting up future meetings to despawning from the story like npc whenever they aren't needed anymore.A chunk of this chapter was wasted on pointless yapping by the other team... but +1 for the harem, noice.

Yeah, that makes sense. Surprised to see Lavia smiling at her walking in at the end but alls well that ends well@Hauberk1800
In all three versons of this novel / manga, Hikaru is very devoted to Lavia. Paula is brought on as a dedicated healer, and only because she is a healer. Hikaru recognizes that he needs a healer, and Paula has proven herself almost reliable.
The webnovel goes on to add Paula as the only other romantic partner after several volumes worth of material. The light novel OTOH is following a completely different storyline after the end of The Red Dragon Calamity arc. Paula will still be accepted as a potential romantic partner, but it appears that the LN will be following a more traditional harem protage story line. There is already one additional female character that has made her feeling known, and there is a fourth who is working up the courage to do so as well.
As a person who grew up in a society where polygamy is the norm, it never has been an issue for Lavia. In fact she states as much in all three versons I've read. So she views Paula more pragmaticly as someone that can keep the man she loves alive if and when he is ever injured. From her point of view, the fact that Paula seems to be so devoted to him is just the icing on the cake.Yeah, that makes sense.
