Original Butao was an asshole.
He has a heart of gold when it comes to protecting his family, but that's it, he could not control his feelings and was extremely jealous and toxic in the middle school he even slandered her and in the game he also spread bad rumors about her and made dirty jokes like she was Yuuma's slut with the added bonus of sexual harassment.
The marriage contract was a device to keep her interacting with the MC despite all the crap he did towards her.
There's no self-sacrificing. (his actions towards her contradicts it like forcing her to wake him up and go to school together).
MC is aware of all the mess Butao did towards her in middle school, so it's kinda hard for him to change that perspective when she acts annoyed towards him, specially when the MC is aware that all the times she approaches him to talk she has second intentions.

Okay, so original Butao was supposed to be this kind of stereotypical character (dumb fat villain). Just thought that because of him being one of the deadly sins the game developers would give him some special role like revealing some hidden background story later in the game explaining his change of character (she originally decided to be with him on her own accord, also I thought that walking to school with him was her own decision because of being his fiance). But it could also just that original Butao became increasingly insecure and thus aggressive and possessive due to being fat (because of gluttony skill). Maybe I interpreted too much into it.

He doesn't lead a pathetic life, there's plenty of material with him lunching together with Risa and Satsuki, sometimes he does lunch with Kuga and often goes into dungeon dives with Tenma/Kuga.
Currently, he has three party, his family, EEE (Risa, Satsuki and his sister), and Tenma's.
About development, Kaoru is going to find out the truth by herself and confront him probably after the author decides to "merge MC with butao" or go with "separate entities".

As I mentioned in another comment calling his life pathetic was maybe a bit too harsh. I just had the feeling that his reaction to finding another "real" person (Risa) was a bit underwhelming. Moreover, it seems like he's more like "enduring" being with them than actually being happy about it. Most of the time he appears to be apathetic and unsocial where he should show more emotion but that's just my opinion.

MC is pretty pathetic but I understand he is being passive to maintain the games original story. I do feel like he can do much more though, since he doesn’t miss the chance to mention how much he has played this game apparently. Not a single epic moment in the last 10 chapters which is quite disappointing considering this could have been a good manga.

When he discover that Risa is also a player, you see it that way, since it only makes him confirm that he is not the only one, remember that the first encounter with another Player was when he defeated Skeleton Knight.
Regarding him being less apathetic and more emotional, it is something that is poorly expressed in the manga,
since from the first moment he makes it clear at least the WN that he contains everything, since he has to represent the Character of BUTAO, when in reality he is the damned "Disaster" of the server, one of the TOP players on the server (at just like Risa and the others who appear) but he knows the story of the game.

He knows that this is the prelude and that in the coming months or years not only the school will be in danger but also the whole world and that if history is modified, then everything will go to shit...
and finally for that same reason it is the one that appears to have no Character growth, since he, so to speak, does not need it, the only way to express it in a simpler way is how to see it if he had only reset the level, the rest remains the same. The only thing that changed as a person is just the level.

Can the author just stop focusing on the side characters and focus on the MC? He doesn't have to be this class hero. I just want him to work behind the scenes to make sure his class makes it and train his ass off for the upcoming danger that'd come in the future.

I want to see his fit form again. It happens whenever he goes all out.

It is on volume 5 and the manga is vastly catching up. There are major changes though, like Suou Kouki losing balls and gaining boobs.

Kaoru also was sweetened like sugar. They even gave us fan service in the manga.

Kano, somehow got improvements on her character.

Don't read the comments from other sites they're absolute dogshit. They think this is a shounen jump manga or solo leveling and want the MC to just bulldoze through everything or have a fight ever other chapter. These people have no idea what normal pacing is. The pacing seems pretty average but anyone who has only read one genre or not many other manga will think it's really slow.

He could have joined the hero's party early in the story, but later we see that if he did that he would be targeted by another player.
He fattens up again after the class battles but ends up being the correct choice because Tsukishima would go crazy due to continuously getting rejected by Kaoru and decide to say fuck all to everything, leading to Souta having to put a cloak and mask and beat the shit out of him.

He hides because he does not want to be kicked out, as plot says Butao stood out in the OG storyline as a sexual harasser (Sera confirmed) and was kicked in the ass by Yuma in the OG storyline.

So now he uses this as a weapon, not standing out so he will not be kicked out, and at the same time using OG knowledge to check if the other players are friend or foe.

Author is copying from Maruyama and the plot is starting to become like that of Overlord....
