The ending was supposed to end like that—it's like an unending ending. There's going to be a lot more going on beyond what we supposedly got. Basically, think of it like an ending for an arc, but instead, it just ends right there when we could've gotten more.
I mean, there are a lot of ideas/issues that the manga hasn't tackled yet, e.g.; "Was the murder justified?" "Shiika's tendencies to hurt someone when in distress," "Mom's views on Rika's recording (if she were to hear it)."
And yeah, these are just some of the things that I find interesting and frankly want to know more about. I mean, there are a lot of other things that could've been mentioned, but I'm just giving out some samples.
I'm pretty sure the premise of the manga was to build relationships and trust with one another—overcome one's weaknesses while embracing the pain of others—thus setting a first stepping stone toward building that sense of "family" that they sought after.
After that was resolved, the manga ended in such a way that could've felt "full" but didn't, since the manga was not about Waka's family, but the prologue of what that family could become.
Well, I'm just glad it ends in such a way, but I wish it didn't end so quickly.
