What do you mean ‘I didn’t expect the old man to turn out to be an evil villain’? It was plastered all over his face! How could you not see that coming? You’d have to be blind in order to miss that. The other people were even complaining about how the old man was a rude, angry, unfriendly person who looked down on everyone else, and never gave them a break or a single kind word. Him being nice to the kid was only a ruse in order to make sure he continued helping him proceed deeper into the ruins.

@Odessakun This was more akin to being suckerpunched, then merely attacked. Also, a physical attack is very different than this magic attack. By the size of it if Abel didn't block it everyone, including Abel's two friends, would have been hit. If someone attacked your friends and family with a gun (the closest we have to magic) out of the blue, would you stay calm? Besides, Abel was recruited by the elf, yet he didn't even try talking with Abel first. Quite clearly Abel had no love for the human mage, and might have been convinced.
