he is reciting poetry and read somewhere before that poem was the classical meaning of that word.

depends on how far back you consider. According to wiktionary, it originally meant "to sing; song" in Chinese. It also states it usually refers to songs in Japanese, but also refers to classical Japanese poetry. it's not a particularly important distinction all things considered.
