They never quite explained it, but apparently, he kicked the ass of the god of his job, so he couldn't keep being dragon knight. It was somehow necessary to save the world, but it still soured the relationship enough that they had to part. Or maybe the dragon knight god felt he had nothing else to teach to the protagonist.
