She warned him before killing him. She really is a good girl...
I'm so sad that this story will end after one chapter. So, place your bets: Who'll be her last victim? Will Rosalind survive her curse?
Her dad? 😔
It’s too bad there’s only one chapter left, because I would love several chapters dedicated to lawyers and psychologists analyzing Rosalind and whether or not she would be competent enough to stand trial for her crimes. She may be only eight, but there are moments like this chapter where she shows some intent for murder and understanding of what she’s doing. Especially since this story was written in the 70s, it would be interesting to see what conclusions they would come up with.
…or maybe I’ve watched too many law and order clips today lol
I've written an essay on psychopath over time (yeah I keep updating this essay LMAO), I didn't mean to read this for serious but I got drawn into 1970s themes anyway, and now for real.
Ok so, bear with me a lil longer on this I got invested in this one. Anyway... Under cluster B of DSM (dramatic, unpredictable outbursts in personality disorders, etc), there are two types of psychopath (I guess both related to both epigenetics and genetics in terms of neuroscience I got a Biology degree just for talking about this LMAO):
Primary psychopath (nature; born that way) and
secondary psychopath (nurture, sociopath is more common for this and they're more emotionally capable compared to primary psychopath, for example
Alex from Clockwork Orange a 1971 sci-fi film on how he was going in weird therapy normalising him); and whether it's
high functioning or low functioning (in terms of ASPD spectrum under cluster B) on how well they live within the society rules based on different
kinds of empathy (eg. hot/affective, compassionate, or
cognitive empathy the latter one fit for these atypicals more to learn on their own...kinda like mirroring to stay within moral threshold)
and sympathy, given how common
empathy gap is even amongst
typicals (normal ones) and
atypicals lol hence that's why ASPD have its own spectrum under Cluster B. I imagine if Rosalind (1973) were to go to therapy, it's either she would have done to similar to how Alex was done to considering both were made in 1970s so not far fetched theory cus usually the scientists have to be damn in tune with its latest topics I imagine these film ppl and mangaka must've done literature research as well for early 70s works they did. Like, imagine this? A bit spoiler indeed, Alex as secondary psychopath (nurture made by his abusive dad) aka a sociopath was forced to watch some emotionally wrenching films alone in a cinema with his eyes wide open there was a graphic tool "helping" his eyes wide open by his psychologist who helped him wetting his eyeballs by eyedrop med because obviously he couldn't blink being held down with that tool, for HOURS. He indeed turned into a human being from that trauma, but to an extreme end: Dying in the hand of his bully friends who hated him to the guts knowing how a bully he was too.
Primary psychopaths in 1960s films like Le Samourai (1967) with Alain Delon as a French hitman and his uncanny valley (that vibe people can't quite put finger on: empty stare and focused somewhat autistic, flat emotions etc etc like some android being like that how doctor's daughter called Rosalind before she was to die on Rosalind playing nurse. Yea, even if they do master how to do emotions from the rigid books with cognitive empathy. There's a keyword meme for this try Google it:
Uncanny Valley Marlon Brando, made on Marlon Brando blending in with a toaster in a dream fever just to explain it).
And so is Rosalind (I am impressed for this 1970s story tho I wonder same like you do hence I wrote my theory above), and Shinichi Izumi from Parasyte manga (1988, this boy from human-> half alien thru his infected cute alien in his hand who later slowly changed him into a primary psychopath and doing actual good for the society; in a way, alien in his hand is like brain tumor would do for people in real life), and then Jung from a manhwa Cheese in The Trap (2011, was diagnosed one in his childhood even tho he didn't really do anything to hit the lines of
typical/atypical thresold [of being normal or not normal], say, animal abuse and bullying usually could be detected from children age for this case but to be officially diagnosed, normally they have to wait until they hit their 20s to be assessed correctly because of brain maturation otherwise it would be enabling for worse, which is again spoiler, he was done for too early by his psychologist who's a friend of his dad). Similar to John from unOrdinary comic in WebToon, for that "therapy."
Back then, it was usually more well studied on crime case related involving psychopaths and sociopaths (as in, cell inmates, on death row etc), not outside crime cases where some of these two atypical ppl could live abiding law like the rest of typicals under the radar well. How? It's self awareness and accepting it to work on their own condition alone or with good help to stay within
moral threshold, I guess. For Rosalind, in this time, likely will get a free ticket for death row given her crime nature of more than ten death counts (obvs that's why these 1970s detectives talking about it already, so therapy choice obvs is thrown outta window... imagine therapists being killed for having Rosalind in therapy like those church sisters were planning to do).
Thanks coming to my Ted talk.
