I mean without context maybe it could be creepy...

But it's like a pretty reasonable thing compared to some his facial reactions (lol). If someone sporadically gave me money for a reason like that I could see myself not spending it and wanting it to return in the future if given the chance (if not I wouldn't lose anything). I feel like it's a valid response not spending that money. Like holding onto something like that long isn't hard especially when it's relatively easy to have it saved somewhere like money.
