The issue with "Karen" is ( better said, are ):

a) Unlike some people think, it is not as widely circulated term as that. Sure, in Redditland and 4chanland it might be , but most of the potential readers might have a issue trying to get what it means. In fact there were a bunch of comments in the other release pointing out that people either straight out didn't understood what "karen" meant in the context or that they had to look out what it meant. That is the clear sign you used a too much fringe term.

b) From the little Japanese I know ( and from what others say as well ), the concept of "Karen" is not exactly what it is on the original text. What is there is more akin of "weird costumer" and if you read enough manga, you know that, while "Karen" and the Japanese idea of a "weird costumer" have some overlap, it is not a very good translation without some extra context ... that is absent.

In other words, "Karen" in itself is not a problem , but "Karen" in this particular situation is not ideal. IMHO, for what it is worth.

That said, it would be better for everyone if we don't start shitposting left and right just because of a less than ideal TL choice. We all have better things to do.

@rrolo1 This is true. It was kind of our mistake, I forgot also foreigners read our translations. We already updated the chapter a day ago but no one seems to have seen.

for a) karen has seeped far enough into culture, at least in the us that people who know a karen know the word. its hitting a point where its used irl by randoms.

as for b) would 'weird costumer' be more fitting with clerks 'weird customers' this may help a bit with people understanding the meaning.

Yeah, maybe ( can't comment on that, not a US denizern ) in the US Karen might be becoming a mainstream word ... but the US have not even 20% of the people that have english as first language. And this is not even talking about people ( like myself ) that do not have english as first language but that are reasonably fluent on it ... ( P.S I actually prefer english TL of manga than on my native language because the translators tend to not be as good as that ... but that is a rant for other day )

And that was my point. If you were translating for Redditland, Karen would be A-OK. If you were only translating for the US market, Karen might be ( or not ) aceptable without any other caveats. But for a world audience, that is what you get when you post a translation online ... not good. Atleast without a TL note., I mean.

The target audience in the end is the main decider in here ... and in the end, when you make a TL to put online, you're translating to everyone in the world that can read that language, not only your country and your socio-economical strata, gender, etc ... You can't assume they will know your local slang, no matter how widespread it is where you live or in the social enviroment you move in. It is a whole diferent issue from a book translation or scientific papers translations , where audiences are more constricted and where it is expected that you use less generic wording. In fact it might be required that you know and use local slang or specific terminology

On the "weird costumer" thing ... again, from the little Japanese I know ( definitely not fluent in it ... in fact, I'm barely able to grasp the general idea most of the times ), the idea I get from the original text ( anyone more fluent than me feel free to correct ) is that the term used is more in line of those Japanese housewifes in the eternal search for a bargain that we see in flocks in so many manga and anime than on any know-it-all and demand-the-manager attitudes that the term Karen as used in the US memesphere calls for. So, weird costumer might unfortunately be too generic, but alteast is more accurate ... :/

Global as in " I can find a person in any country that knows it" or Global as in "Everyone everywhere knows it" ? There is a significant diference between both ... for the first you need around 200 people, for the latter you need millions And unfortunately it is common to see people confusing both of those "Global" meanings ...

Well, as you speak of Europe ... I am in a European country, founding member of NATO ( so not from Eastern Europe ) and where English is a unofficially mandated second or third language ( to not enter in details, kids have 5 mandated years to study a 2nd language and 3 years for a third. Default options are English and French and German + Castillian as less common options ), so there is a lot of fluent readers atleast. I can assure you that "Karen" is not a widely understood reference around here.

Also, may I point out that, even if we are extremely generous the USA + UK english as first language population would be covered by India + Pakistan + Nigeria + Philipphines english speakers ( note, not even counting whole populations of countries that have english as a official language , mind that, just actual english speakers ) alone? Don't overestimate the US in this kind of things ...

More seriously the whole affair seems born due culture dissonance about its widespread, for example it was ages since I read someone used "karen" and I somehow remember it was much more common 5 or so years ago (mostly because it was more o less equal of another even more fringe term in spic land, "deyanira") but even now and then, it would cost nothing a unconspicuous tl note, even moreso in @rrolo1 case with the papers, unless it's an high school term, isn't uncommon scientist put either the whole term followed by the acronym (or an entirely separated section with all acronyms and it's meaning) or the term with it's definition before they used said word(s) unexplaned the rest of it; back at my point, its okeyish using memes if they don't change the meaning (too much), sadly I cannot say the same for the last time, the wording mitsuha used to swindle russian agents it had meaning to be, not the random ra-rasputin nosense.

while karen's can and sometimes overlap this segment, its less a 'let me speak to your manager and get you fired' and more of a social manipulation to get the lowest price I can get.

My Numbers are the Wikipedia ones for actual speakers as per census results... otherwise India would suffice to dwarf the US These are people thay say under oath and under risk of fines if they lie they use English as a primary language ... More, the countries I mentioned ALL have english as a oficial language, something that if you want to be nitpicky about it, is not even the case of the US ( the USA doesn't have a official language, just a legal one to print laws on ) ...

Anyway:

a) First of all, why should anyone assume as a translator that the audience has the duty to get acess to suplementary material ( worse, have to do it to understand their translator quirks )? In a technical manual, surely ... in a manga, probably not , and if you do, most likely it would be about Japan ( the source of the material after all ) and not about ( American ) memeology, atleast if the manga is not about memes. Assuming otherwise is a bit entitled from the translator and only adds noise to the original work ...

b) Your definition of primary speakers has some issues. Say, if someone that can think on English ( yes, it is possible to think in more than one language ) and uses it everyday, is it a primary speaker ?
