I’m not really sure of what the author thinks but English is mandatory from elementary school to college here in France in addition to a third language. I’m pretty sure it’s the same in Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Italy but I could be mistaken. My point is that there’s a lot of English speakers in Europe specifically among younger people with globalization and the rise of the Internet.
Japanese people tend to suck at English so Shinjou Takuya may be under the (false) impression that everybody speaks multiple languages but I believe it’s somewhat true that us Europeans are pretty much all at least bilingual.

I think you guys are confusing the intended meaning here. She went to Spain, a Spanish speaking country, hence why her self-taught English is even more impressive because her coming from Spain has no relevance to her English mastery, making her proficiency in English even more amazing.

They're in football team of course there's also people from different country too like her from Japan
learning basic English to communicated is easier and then they could learn Spain slowly overtime

She was saying she taught herself English, not that she learned English because she was in Spain. She already said she learned Spanish in Spain in an earlier chapter
