@UserNamesAreOverrated Almost a page of echo-chambering "people should not take life seriously" and freedom of speech as long as it's not criticism of what they like.
its just plain trash, so many historic inaccuracy ( does this author even try ?) and kid edgyness fantasy, another work of a nationalist japanese adult that never really grew out of his child phase.
if wanting a decent storyline and the writing of someone competent is being a butthurt then yes there might be a lot of butthurt or maybe there is just a lot of neckbeard that like their edgy fantasy setting, who knows ? grow up.
@kwendy
Alright, if you want to take the posts saying not to take this seriously as butthurt than that's true I guess
Not that I see the connection between not taking this manga seriously and not taking life seriously
Anyways, I think I'll stop posting in the comments (except for errors and questions and such), because it just seems like a butthurt translator defending his work
And I will accept that that means that I look like a butthurt loser running from an argument
For fuck's sake if you aren't gonna enjoy the manga (which clearly isnt here with historical accuracy as its focus) drop and move on to something else. Stop freaking out about how inaccurate a work of blatant fiction is, or how edgy it gets as it shows you some of the darker aspects of war.
@FreezeHorizon
Are you shure it was?
I took a look at the ending and the author wrote nothing about getting axed.
Couldn't find anything on Wikipedia either
I don't get it, I mean comments sole purpose is to comment and review the stuff that you are reading. This manga is just bad, I mean it looks like nazi apologist propaganda showing glorious SS against scummy partisans. It's like Riefenstahl's or Goebbels' propaganda mixed with manga. I don't mind showing atrocities or germans in a good way, hell, I love Tanya the Evil series that also have such element but does not try to whitewash. This one is just pure edgy, japanese, nationalistic pile of trash fetish manga.
First, it shows war as it was ... brutal and there is nothing about Nazism outside following a fictitious unit of the 502nd SS Jäger Battalion so the whole "looks like nazi apologist propaganda" is simply skinning the pages or worst, judge the book by the cover since its never brought up.
Also are you seriously going to say the allies were squeakily clean as well partisans? I have one thing to say about that ... Naliboki massacre and the wikipedia list is rather extensive, the point is that its war and demonize a side to the point that is a caricature is propaganda and the victors should not get a free pass because they won,this is not a apology towards a ideology but pointing out that you cannot claim its propaganda because its not using then as the caricature you want then to be shown as.
I suppose in current year series like 'Allo 'Allo! and Das Boot are impossible because "Muh Feelings" and "Nazi Boogyman" ... in fact the term Nazi at this point lost most of its significance after being so oversued by certain people in Social Media and that is the shame, it used to mean something but then again its impossible to have any discussion without turning into "Nazi-Bad!".
And a lot of comments are just for social credit, I seen people making the dumbest comments over things like people saying the Iron Cross is a symbol of Nazism because since it replaced the Swastika since they cannot show it and the Iron Cross became it stand-in people started WRONGLY associate it as the same as the Swastika, welcome to 2020.
@Exile How to even unpack this comment. First please don't put a straw man arguments. I've never said that you shouldn't depict Nazis or a german military iconography. I even enjoy it in the manga format for example stuff like Youjo Senki that also show war atrocities but do it in more tasteful way.
Ok let's start!
There is nothing about Nazism except following fictitious unit. Yup, I agree but it glorify pretty bad formation. Just look how every partisan or Soviet soldier is depicted. They are degenerate, rape everything that moves, they kill each other just to show authority, use children, hell they even attached a naked women on a car mask!
Even on the visual level this is obnoxious. They look like caricatures. Especially when you contrast them to beautiful German characters shown in the manga.
About partisans yeah they also did some nasty stuff like every side of the conflict, but especially in this type of story you really need to carefully thread the needle. You can't just show bad partisans vs good Nazis. Especially like that. Just think about it how the manga just skips where the story is happening. Who is the invader here? By the behaviour of the both sides you can even assume that SS is even protecting the civilians!
You don't need per se to show Nazi ideology to be a Nazist propaganda. Not even the real war propaganda was like that. This one just tries to show heroic, beautiful SS soldiers vs ugly and cowardly Slavs. It even use real propaganda imagniare like the wolf symbol for example to show how noble they are.
@AngryFerret, So your complain is that the opponent have to be shown in a good light? They are the enemy and its not a stretch of then committing such actions as the Red Army had a reputation of doing such things. This is not about "good" and "bad" as if they had no qualms of using children they also had no qualms of shooting said children.
The problem seems to come down to who the manga focus on, that being a all-female German tank squad that because of they are part of the Waffen-SS they are automatic "Nazis", that the author must right from the start having the characters denounce Nazism as otherwise its some kind of Nazist propaganda.
And thats it, also "by who is the invader here" its obvious this is set later in the war considering the usage of "Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E." as it was re-designated as such in March 1943 and the 502nd SS Jäger Battalion was only formed in June 1943, the setting is likely around late 1944 when the Red Army moved into German proper.
@Exileb I think we don't understand each other. This is sensitive topic especially when you deal with organization such as SS that was so deep into Nazi ideology. If it would satisfy you replace Nazi propaganda with III Reich/German propaganda.
You really don't see how vastly different Germans and Slavs are portrayed in this manga? I mean you really need to skim this manga to not see the clear distinguishment between good and bad guys To say it beforehand and negate your argument that they are fighting and the author wanted to show it realistically, just look at the character presentation. Germans, young and beautiful, even the guards in the barracks. USRR and partisants looks ugly, old and even animal like. This is propaganda. Also SS protect each other and teach the value of life(oh God it couldn't be more obnoxious), when partisans kill each other.
I will repeat myself I don't mind edgy, gritty manga and I would be ok with this one, even with SS MCs just make it balanced. Let Germans be also repulsive and ugly. If you say that it will not work in cute girls manga. Why not make SS male character like that? Or just not be so on the nose on their enemies.
The one time this does bring up nazism or whatever the word for that would be, the commanding officer blatantly says that he is against the holocaust and terrifies the mc bc if anybody heard that theyd get executed for treason.
The author makes it clear enough that you're here for the war setting and the mentality of these soldiers, who are patriotic enough to be considered suicidal but not a single one of them shows any signs of racism or spouting propaganda.
If you must comment and argue and discuss the story, do so - bit dont spring up an argument and bullshit that has no bearing on the manga itself.
If and when an instance of a main character who can be considered a "good guy" from the pov of this story shows despicable tendencies or beliefs, THEN I'll be willing to sit in on a discussion about this story possibly being propaganda.
As for your complaints about the germans being attractive and the enemies being ugly... Dude, the main characters are girls. Young, attractive girls. And the enemy is the enemy. It doesnt matter which side is which for that, from the perspective of this story, the main characters look good and the chumps that are getting killed by them look bad.
These girls are literally a sacrificial unit fighting against some blatantly wicked men. If there's any propaganda here past the fictional take on a historic setting, it'd be feminist propaganda about how depraved men are.
I highly suggest you actually read the manga and pay better attention to the actual story being woven here. You're making it pretty obvious you've only skimmed it in search of petty complaints to argue over... Just because it's a story involving nazis.
Well here's my personal opinion, @AngryFerret.
your attempts at crafting an argument here with people who came to read a gimmicky manga featuring cute girls in military uniforms and classic tanks is utterly
pointless. The political crap is actively avoided by thr story, bc the setting is literally just here to give us cute girls and tanks and guns. Nobody came here expecting a masterpiece of historical fiction. I'm frankly pleased by the level of detail put into the artwork on the tanks, which is pretty much that's keeping me here besides the habit of reading ebery story i start to the end. This story has barely even gotten started, anyway. Come back later with a better argument and actually relevant topic to discuss.
>hot garbage
>suddenly accidently buttpain

@Exile: >I suppose in current year series like 'Allo 'Allo! and Das Boot are impossible because "Muh Feelings" and "Nazi Boogyman" ... in fact the term Nazi at this point lost most of its significance after being so oversued by certain people in Social Media and that is the shame, it used to mean something but then again its impossible to have any discussion without turning into "Nazi-Bad!".
I disagree since there are real Nazis which are hopefully labelled as such, fuck the cunts calling everyone in opposition to them Nazi, so let us rightfully ignore the cunts who shout Nazi at everyone who disagrees with them or has an opinion more to the right than them, but Nazis are indeed bad.
E4: writing'ses are of very hurrd, me brain hurt
Cripes.. every time there's a manga that features Nazi imagery, the holy inquisition comes in. Heaven forbid we grow a mental barrier against these things.
@Nightdotexe
I translated it like that to fit the original more closely, but thinking about it know I could have changed it because I already changed the name from "Schäferhound" to "Schäferhund" so it is at least a German word.
But you could also argue that it works like that because it's a single unit and thus use singular
I feel like if I start reading this without making this comment, the FSB agents, who are undoubtedly reading everyone's browsing history over here, will come for me. I reckon most people reading this, including myself, are interested in it as a peculiar piece of trash. I think that a manga that looks like it can be described as "cute girls do ecchi things except they're a german tank unit in ww2, so ofc there's gore and rape that fits right in with the edginess that comes with portraying germans in ww2 as protagonists" won't radicalise anyone into becoming a neonazi. It's just a piece of trashy edgy "art" that somehow ran for 8 fucking volumes even though it's basically political edginess X gore porn.
In short: nazis bad, USSR less bad, Allies good, uncle Vasya, please don't come knockin'.
