Spirit users are always so annoying from a writing perspective, it completely negates the need for a character to handle power consciously and be touched/influenced by it, everything is handled by the spirits, the "user" just dictates, which cheapens any kind of maturation the character might experience by getting their hands dirty.

Spirit contractors, on the other hand, are totally awesome, Kaze no Stigma is one of the best examples of that.
