It's like I was made for this...
Genuinely, this premise is so original and interesting.
For one, the historical setting. The manga explicitly acknowledges both Japan's militarism at the time and Qing China... I wonder if the theme of communication and connection will be interwoven into the manga's historical setting. Like, "world peace through the internet!!"-type of thing. Also, the role of women during the Meiji period is linked with fujoshi culture and female internet spaces. Isn't that just a match made in heaven?
The nerd gags are hilarious too. The idea of performing HTTP requests got a laugh out of me, not to mention the constant Wikipedia-style citations. The suspiciously-4chan-shaped board Yotsuba caught me off guard too: are Japanese people aware of 4chan, or is this just a nod to 2chan that coincidentally makes the
Yotsuba&! connection?
"Wait, how do they stick those in there?" is crazy lol
The ending of this first chapter is ominous, considering Japan's militarization. I guess Kanako will be involved in top-secret work from now on.
