@Redice I think it's a pea shooter BECAUSE it's mock battles (and he needs the referee counting points to win). A real magic gun would be probably too dangerous, like risking to kill bystanders and blowing holes in mechs, I don't think they have infinite money to make repairs or magic barriers to protect people.

@greatninja3 the current culture is that of chivalrous knights. so they tend to go for close combat. enemies will be limited to beast, or small number of knight. they do have better guns. so his shots are more worth it.
its training magic`s only use is to score points. for him the mana cost is minuscule. but others not. but in life battle you should not underestimate injuries. when you down someone. they require protection. while being disabled for a fight.

he does end up as a knight of the merchants. they appreciate the value of his skill. the ability to support others and the ability to survive(dodge) . it will preserve the mechs better and its repair cost. also the will to ignore hindering pride. like demanding 1 on 1 dual. or to fight fairly/evenly.

Typical small fry bad guy. It's never his fault for failing to keep on top of things or being in charge it's solely the fault of the poor guy reporting in. That and the fact were resorting to underhanded means to weaken the kingdom by harming civilians is completely fine as long as the emperor is happy and done under his orders. Not. In any case it's good MC has developed a good strategy to fight with, although should talk with mechanic about decreasing the sensation of pain in some way.
