I feel like this could become something really good, but that shounen tag still scares me, I hope it's ignored entirely because I can only see it holding the series back.

Shounen is just the targeted demographic of the magazine the manga is serialized in. It's not an actual genre and probably won't affect the writing unless the series gets axed for not appealing to the readers.. Which I doubt anyways since we've had manga like this in the shounen category and they're pretty damn good.
