He needs to keep it going instead of letting it go out. Or at least save some embers so he can restart from that. (I've never done that myself but there's stuff online about it and it doesn't seem too difficult.)

My point was it would not be difficult to figure out a way to store embers for a least a few hours. I used Duck Duck Go to verify that I wasn't mistaken. After a couple of days I would have experimented hoping to figure something out.
